The worst of 1990s Tory sleaze (eg Aitken) is about the level of the least of the Labour misbehaviour. Labour deliberately circumvented the (then fairly neutral) civil service on assuming power in 1997 and has systematically politicised it ever since. And what about the inclusion of Lord Sainsbury in the Cabinet? Prior to his appointment no minister had bought their position for 200 years! Labour deliberately set out to corrupt, control or marginalise our national institutions, all in the name of 'modernisation'. Most of the time they have enjoyed support (or, at least, lack of serious criticism) in the main stream media. Now it's time for a change...

Re sleaze : Tories were total amateurs compared to Bliar and Brown. I think it fair to say that this is Labour's one real success - the nationalization of sleaze.

I see no reason to conflate partial sightedness with spelling ability; the order of letters comes from the brain, not the eyes. The ragged nature of the letter reflect badly on Brown: the general cack-handedness of of a dud letter being sent without even the most cursory checking of its contents and spelling reflects poorly on his advisers and secretaries.

I have a horrible feeling this is all going to backfire and people are going to start feeling sympathy for Brown.

If this story ends up becoming "Brown being bullied because he's practically blind" rather than, "Brown hasn't funded the military properly" or "Brown doesn't pay any attention to detail" then the Sun will have completely failed.

This story is toxic for everyone, I think.
